Generative Engine Optimization Framework
Many teams treat GEO as generic content tuning. That misses the mechanism. Real GEO performance depends on four connected gates: crawl access, answer extraction, citation trust, and narrative control.
Crawl Access -> Answer Extraction -> Citation Trust -> Narrative Control
Gate 1: Crawl Access
If AI bots cannot reliably fetch pages, every downstream optimization is capped.
- Required assets: robots allow rules, healthy sitemap, stable headers.
- Core failure patterns: blocked bots, redirect chains, slow TTFB, orphan pages.
- KPI: AI bot accessibility coverage and crawl success rate.
Gate 2: Answer Extraction
Pages need machine-readable answer blocks, not only long-form prose.
- Required assets: clear heading hierarchy, FAQ/Q&A modules, concise definitions.
- Core failure patterns: weak H-structure, missing meta/canonical, noisy page templates.
- KPI: answer-block extraction coverage on priority pages.
Gate 3: Citation Trust
AI systems prefer sources with evidence and provenance signals.
- Required assets: byline, date, cited data, schema consistency.
- Core failure patterns: anonymous pages, no freshness signals, weak fact density.
- KPI: citation-ready page ratio and mention share in answer engines.
Gate 4: Narrative Control
Without routing control, models may cite lower-value or outdated pages.
- Required assets: llms.txt, llms-full.txt, canonical routing, topic hubs.
- Core failure patterns: scattered topical pages and inconsistent canonical priority.
- KPI: canonical-page pickup rate in AI answers.
14-Day Execution Map
| Phase | Focus | Deliverable | Expected Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1-3 | Crawl Access | robots, sitemap, header patch list | More reliable fetch and page discovery |
| Day 4-7 | Answer Extraction | FAQ blocks + metadata cleanup | Higher answer inclusion probability |
| Day 8-11 | Citation Trust | author/date and evidence modules | Improved citation confidence |
| Day 12-14 | Narrative Control | llms routing and internal links | Better canonical page selection |
Run GEOScore and map each failed check to one of these four gates. Ship by gate priority, then re-scan weekly.
